Just read Sue Marek’s wish list for Santa this year. Viable business model for broadcast mobile TV tops the list. Why? Video over 1.5-3 mins in mobile does not have an audience. So who needs full broadcast to mobile? In a not too distant future, sure. Then we have screens etc for it. But today?!
When it comes to video/TV in the mobile channel we need good, well adapted content combined with efficient and low cost distribution via the data network. There you have subscription, pay-per-view or most likely free ad-funded as business models to choose from.
Back to my first point. Good content. We need really good content. Besides the content creators, I call them the professionals here, we need to bring tools to the masses so they can create content that is ok for others to watch. User Generated Content is a great concept in many ways. Only, in video it has gone seriously wrong. Because you have a video camera in your phone or a stand-alone version you are not Steven Spielberg. That amount of UGC video on the net (PC and mobile) is 99.9% crap.
But, there are ways. Storytelling does follow templates. It is possible to sell the service to people to give templates complete with director’s notes on how to shoot the clips and meld them together to 1.5 min good UGC video. Watch this space for interesting information on a company in this space. Note. It is not one of my own companies nor a client of mine I will “out” here as soon as the team at Company X is ready.
So watch this space for one of the more interesting companies of 2009. And remeber where you read it first.
