I think today might have been what will be seen as a milestone in hindsight. Apple releasing a 3G, GPS enabled iPhone at a price that is way below the current smartphone price point – 199 USD as opposed to what…3,4,5,600 USD?. The fact that the phone is now going to be launched in 70 markets including many countries in Africa and South America underlines the fact that Apple is going for the mass market much faster than I think anyone anticipated.
The enterprise support makes it a business tool as much as an entertainment machine it already is. So the market should be expanding in all kinds of directions.
The worst case scenario that the iPhone itself does not become the success many think it has raised the bar (and lowered the price!) for the others out there. This will surely push the Nokias, SonyEricssons of this world further faster.
As a user interface it has no competition at this point. My 4 year old son steals mine and takes pictures and flips in the photo album as if he has never done anything else in his life. So now I think there is a case for all mobile content developers to look seriously at the iPhone as a mass market device.
10 million sold iPhones by year end? Piece of cake!
Disclosure: I do not own Apple shares but I am a happy user of a cracked 1.1.3 version iPhone. And yes, I paid way to much for it.
